Ribera del Duero is a Denominación de Origen (DO) wine region in north-central Spain, covering approximately 23,000 hectares of vineyards along the Duero River valley in the provinces of Burgos, Valladolid, Soria, and Segovia, in Castile and León. The DO was established in 1982. The production zone sits at approximately 750–900 metres above sea level on the Iberian Meseta — a high plateau with a severe continental climate: cold winters, hot summers, and extreme diurnal (day-to-night) temperature variation during the growing season. The primary grape is Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo, also known as Tinta del País), which constitutes over 95% of plantings. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Garnacha are also permitted. Red wine only — no white wine is produced under the DO (white wine from the same zone is sold as Castilla y León IGP). The governing body is the Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero. The region is home to Vega Sicilia — Spain's most internationally celebrated wine estate, producing Único since the 1860s.
Why altitude produces Ribera's intensity
The Ribera del Duero's defining characteristic is its altitude — approximately 750–900 metres above sea level on the Meseta central, the vast plateau that covers much of interior Spain. At this altitude, the region experiences a continental climate of exceptional severity: winters with temperatures down to −20°C that kill frost-unprotected vines (frost risk persists into June), and summers with daytime temperatures exceeding 40°C. The vine's growing season is compressed into a shorter window than lower-altitude Spanish regions, but the summer heat is sufficient for full phenolic maturity.
The key to Ribera's wine character is the diurnal temperature variation — the difference between day and night temperatures during the growing season. At 800m altitude, nights are significantly cooler than days even in midsummer. A day that reaches 38°C may see temperatures drop to 12–15°C at night. This temperature swing slows overnight the metabolic processes that consume acids — preserving natural acidity despite the hot days. The result: fully ripe Tempranillo with simultaneously high fruit concentration and high natural acidity — a combination that produces wines with both immediate appeal and the structure for long ageing.
Vega Sicilia — the estate that defined Spanish fine wine
Vega Sicilia is the most internationally recognised Spanish wine estate and has been producing wine since 1864. The estate's flagship wine — Único — is a blend of Tinto Fino and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for a minimum of 10 years in the winery (a combination of oak barrels and bottle) before release. It is one of the longest-aged wines produced anywhere in the world under its producing estate's control. Único is only released in years the estate judges to be exceptional — the production is small (typically 20,000–30,000 bottles) and the wine is allocated to a small number of distributors globally.
Vega Sicilia's significance to Spanish wine history: it demonstrated, from the 1960s onwards, that Spanish red wine could compete with the finest Bordeaux and Burgundy in international blind tastings and auction markets. Its success contributed to the investment in quality production in Ribera del Duero that preceded the DO's formal establishment in 1982.

- Dominio de Pingus — Peter Sisseck (Danish winemaker). Pingus is produced from extremely old vines (~70–80 year old Tinto Fino), in tiny quantities (~500 cases). Consistently one of Spain's most expensive and sought-after wines. First vintage: 1995.
- Pesquera (Alejandro Fernández) — pioneer of modern Ribera del Duero, founded 1972. Instrumental in establishing the DO's reputation from the 1980s. Janus and Reserva are benchmark expressions.
- Hacienda Monasterio — also Peter Sisseck; entry-level range including Crianza and Reserva from the same estate.

Diurnal temperature range — the science of acid retention at altitude
The primary biochemical mechanism by which diurnal temperature variation preserves natural grape acidity is the inhibition of malate respiration during cool nights. Malic acid is the primary volatile acid in unripe grapes and is progressively degraded during ripening through mitochondrial malate dehydrogenase activity. Degradation rates are temperature-dependent: at cool night temperatures (10–15°C), malate degradation is significantly slower than at warm night temperatures (20–25°C). The net effect is that a vineyard experiencing 25°C diurnal variation retains substantially more malic acid at harvest than one experiencing only 10°C variation at the same daytime peak temperature.
The retention of malic acid at harvest is reflected in the higher total acidity and lower pH of Ribera del Duero Tinto Fino relative to equivalent-ripeness Tempranillo from lower-altitude zones (Rioja Oriental, La Mancha, Valdepañas). Documented in Etaio et al. (2010) in Food Chemistry: Ribera del Duero wines showed significantly higher total acidity (7.2–8.5 g/L tartaric equivalent) compared to Rioja Alavesa (6.0–7.0 g/L) at comparable alcohol levels.
The altitude also affects UV radiation — at 800m, UV-B intensity is approximately 10% higher than at sea level, which increases polyphenol synthesis in grape skins (anthocyanins and flavonoids are UV-protective pigments). Higher UV = deeper colour, higher tannin, more flavonoid antioxidants — documented as one reason Ribera Tinto Fino is typically more deeply coloured than lower-altitude Tempranillo from the same clone.
