Rioja
Spain's most recognised wine name globally. An ageing classification system that tells you almost everything on the label. And a 2018 reform that changed a century of tradition.
Rioja is a wine produced in the Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa) Rioja — Spain's highest wine quality classification, and one of only two DOCa designations in Spain (the other being Priorat). The Rioja DOCa covers approximately 65,000 hectares across three sub-zones in the autonomous communities of La Rioja, Basque Country (Álava), and part of Navarre: Rioja Alta (western, higher altitude, cooler, more Atlantic-influenced), Rioja Alavesa (northern bank of the Ebro, Álava province, predominantly clay-limestone soils, warmer and more sheltered), and Rioja Oriental (formerly Rioja Baja — renamed in 2018 — eastern, warmer, more Mediterranean-influenced). The governing body is the Consejo Regulador de la DOCa Rioja. The primary red grape is Tempranillo. Rioja is the only major Spanish DOCa to use a tiered oak-ageing classification system — Joven, Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva — as the primary label information for consumers. Why Rioja labels by ageing — not vineyard
Almost every other major wine region in the world labels by geography first — by appellation, village, or vineyard. Rioja has historically labelled by ageing duration — Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva — telling the consumer how long the wine was aged in oak and bottle before release. This approach was commercially driven: in a region where blending across sub-zones was the norm and most wines came from large bodegas buying grapes from many different producers, vineyard identity was less relevant than ageing character.
The result is a labelling system that, unlike Burgundy or Barolo, immediately communicates the wine's style and readiness to drink: Joven is the youngest, fruitiest, least oak-influenced; Gran Reserva is the most aged, most complex, most oak-integrated. A consumer who prefers fresh, unoaked wine buys Joven; a collector looking for complex, evolved Tempranillo buys Gran Reserva. The system is simple, practical, and consumer-friendly — and it is Rioja's most distinctive regulatory characteristic globally.
Tempranillo — the defining grape
Tempranillo (Vitis vinifera cv. Tempranillo, also called Cencibel in La Mancha, Tinto Fino in Ribera del Duero, Tinta Roriz in Portugal) is Spain's most widely planted quality red variety. In Rioja it is typically the dominant component (60–90%) of red wine blends, supported by Garnacha (Grenache), Graciano, and Mazuelo (Carignan). Tempranillo is relatively early-ripening (the name derives from "temprano" — early), medium-bodied, with moderate natural acidity, red cherry and strawberry fruit, and good tannin — well-suited to oak ageing because its tannins are firm but not coarse, integrating smoothly with wood-derived vanillin and spice compounds.
Tempranillo's natural acidity is lower than Nebbiolo or Sangiovese — which is why the traditional Rioja blending practice included Garnacha (which adds body and alcohol in warm years) and Graciano (which adds acidity, fresh fruit, and ageability). The high-altitude Rioja Alta and Alavesa sites produce Tempranillo with higher acidity and finer tannin structure than the warmer Rioja Oriental, which produces softer, riper, more alcohol-forward expressions.

White and rosé Rioja
White Rioja was historically dominated by Viura (Macabeo) — a neutral, oxidation-prone variety that produced the characteristic "traditional" oxidative white Rioja style: golden in colour, nutty, waxy, and deliberately oxidised through extended barrel ageing. This style was widely replaced from the 1990s onwards by temperature-controlled, reductive-winemaking white Rioja made for freshness — unoaked, pale, citrus-forward.
White Rioja is produced from Viura (Macabeo, dominant), Malvasía Riojana, Garnacha Blanca, Verdejo, Tempranillo Blanco (a white mutation of Tempranillo, unique to Rioja), Maturana Blanca, and Turruntés. The 2018 reforms also permitted white wines to be labelled by sub-zone and municipality, allowing producers to differentiate terroir character in white wines for the first time.
American oak vs French oak — the chemistry of Rioja's traditional character
Traditional Rioja was aged in American oak (Quercus alba) — a legacy of the region's historical trade connections with the United States and the commercial availability of American oak barrels. American oak has a distinctive chemical profile compared to French oak (Quercus petraea): higher concentration of oak lactones (cis-β-methyl-γ-octalactone) producing coconut and vanilla character; lower ellagitannin content (less structural tannin contribution); and higher eugenol concentration (clove, spice notes). The distinctive "coconut and vanilla" character associated with traditional Rioja is primarily attributable to the high cis-oak lactone content of American oak.
From the 1990s onwards, many producers switched to French oak — which produces more subtle oak influence, higher structural tannin from ellagitannins, and more cedar/pencil shaving aromatic notes. The "modern" vs "traditional" Rioja debate of the 1990s–2000s was partly a debate about American vs French oak. Today both styles coexist within the DOCa, and the regulations specify no oak origin requirement.
The oak lactone chemistry difference is measurable: cis-β-methyl-γ-octalactone concentration in American oak-aged wine is documented at 100–400 μg/L (above the 40–100 μg/L detection threshold); French oak-aged wine typically shows 10–50 μg/L.
