Vajikarana — Reproductive Health
Vajikarana is the eighth of the eight classical branches of Ayurveda — dedicated to reproductive health, sexual vitality, and the optimisation of Shukra Dhatu (reproductive tissue). Charaka Samhita dedicates an entire section (Chikitsasthana 30 onwards) to Vajikarana — documenting herbs, formulations, and practices for Shukra Dhatu enhancement in both male and female contexts.
The Shukra-Ojas connection
Classical texts document the direct relationship: Shukra Dhatu, when perfectly formed, produces Ojas — the vital essence that governs immunity, mental stability, and the radiance of health. When Shukra is depleted, Ojas is depleted. When Ojas is depleted, all seven Dhatu are compromised. This is why Vajikarana is not a peripheral branch — it is the branch that governs the health of the most fundamental vital substance.
Primary Vajikarana herbs
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): The primary male Vajikarana Rasayana. Multiple RCTs document testosterone enhancement, sperm quality improvement, and semen parameter improvement. Research: Ambiye et al. (2013) Evidence-Based CAM; DOI: 10.1155/2013/571420.
Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens): Primary for Shukra Kshaya and associated Vata conditions. L-DOPA content explains dopaminergic reproductive regulation. Research: Ahmad et al. (2012) Fertility and Sterility; DOI: 10.1016/j.fertnstert.2012.04.001.
Musali (Chlorophytum borivilianum): Primary Shukrala (Shukra-increasing) herb; steroidal saponin content.
Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus): Primary female Vajikarana Rasayana; documented for Artava Kshaya and lactation.
Classical Vajikarana preparations
Ashwagandha Lehya: Ashwagandha powder, ghee, honey, and sugar — the classic Vajikarana compound for general Shukra enhancement. Musali Pak: Musali-based sweet preparation for Shukra Kshaya. Kapikacchu seed powder with warm milk: Simple classical preparation documented in Charaka Samhita Chikitsasthana 30. Chyawanprash: Documented as Vajikarana alongside its Rasayana properties — the Amalaki base nourishes all seven Dhatu progressively to Shukra.
