In the early 1980s, Priorat was a dying wine region. The population had been leaving for decades — driven out by the harshness of farming near-vertical slate hillsides by hand, and by the low prices paid for the strong, rough table wines that were the region's only commercial product. Many vineyards had been abandoned. Old Garnacha and Cariñena vines, some over 80 years old, sat untended on the black slate terraces.
Then five winemakers arrived. René Barbier (a Frenchman with Catalan roots), Álvaro Palacios (from the Rioja wine family), Dafne Glorian, Carles Pastrana, and José Luis Pérez had a shared conviction: that the llicorella soils and the ancient vines were producing something extraordinary — if approached with the methods of Burgundy and Bordeaux rather than the bulk wine traditions of the Spanish interior.
The term llicorella is specific to the Priorat — it has no precise geological equivalent in any other language. It refers not to a single rock type but to the complex of dark slates, schists, phyllites, and quartzites that make up the Priorat's distinctive black-soil vineyards. These rocks fracture into thin sheets and angular fragments that drain any water almost instantaneously. In the Priorat's hot, dry climate (less than 500mm of rainfall per year), this creates extreme water stress — which forces vine roots to penetrate 10, 20, sometimes 30 metres into the fractured rock in search of moisture. This depth of rooting is associated with the mineral complexity and textural concentration that defines the finest Priorat wines.
