Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 28 — Dhatu 5
Asthi Dhatu: Karma — Dharana (support of the body). Seat — Hip bones. Upadhatu — Body hair. Mala — Nakha (nails) and Kesha (body hair) — the Kha-Mala of Asthi.

Classical documentation

Asthi Dhatu is bone tissue — the structural framework of the body. Charaka Samhita documents Asthi as Vata-dominated tissue (Vayu element predominates in bone's hard, dry, hollow quality) — which explains why Vata conditions most commonly affect bone quality. The upadhatu (secondary tissue) of Asthi is the teeth, and the mala (waste products) are nails and body hair — classical diagnostics accordingly uses nail quality and hair quality as indicators of Asthi Dhatu health. The Asthi assessment directly maps to modern bone density assessment and calcium metabolism.

Elements
Prithvi + Vayu
Primary seat
Hip bones
Primary karma
Dharana (support of the body)
Channel
Bone channels — Asthivaha Srotas
Upadhatu
Body hair
Mala
Nakha (nails) and Kesha (body hair) — the Kha-Mala of Asthi

Signs of imbalance

Vriddhi (excess): Extra bone growths (Asthi Vriddhi — exostoses), excess teeth, extra nail growth

Kshaya (deficiency): Brittle nails, hair loss, loose teeth, joint pain, bone pain, cracking joints

Dhatvagni — the tissue fire
Asthi Dhatvagni — impaired in Vata-dominant states and calcium/mineral deficiency. When Dhatvagni is impaired — by Ama, improper diet, or Dosha aggravation — the tissue cannot properly form the next Dhatu in the chain. This is why classical treatment of tissue deficiency begins not with tissue-building herbs but with Deepana (kindling the Dhatvagni) and Pachana (digesting the Ama that impairs it).
Rasayana for this Dhatu
Sesame, Bala, Ashwagandha, Shilajit, calcium-rich preparations — Asthikrit herbs. The classical Rasayana approach to Asthi Dhatu: nourish the Dhatvagni first, then provide the specific Dhatu-building raw material through appropriate Rasayana preparations.
