Dhatu 1: Rasa — Plasma/lymph
Rasa Dhatu is the first of the seven classical body tissues — formed from food essence (Ahara Rasa) through the action of Rasa Dhatvagni. Its primary function is ayu (longevity), tarpana (nourishment).
Classical documentation
Rasa Dhatu is the first and most fundamental tissue — the watery plasma that circulates continuously through the Rasavaha Srotas, nourishing all other tissues. Charaka Samhita, Vimanasthana 5 documents that the quality of Rasa Dhatu determines the quality of all subsequent Dhatu in the formation chain. When Rasa is impaired — either by Ama accumulation, inadequate nutrition, or Dosha aggravation — every downstream Dhatu will also be compromised. The classical understanding of Rasa maps closely to modern plasma: the carrier of nutrients, immune factors, and regulatory molecules to all tissues.
