Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 28 — Dhatu 1
Rasa Dhatu: Karma — Ayu (longevity), Tarpana (nourishment). Seat — Heart. Upadhatu — Ojas. Mala — Kapha — the waste product of Rasa metabolism.

Classical documentation

Rasa Dhatu is the first and most fundamental tissue — the watery plasma that circulates continuously through the Rasavaha Srotas, nourishing all other tissues. Charaka Samhita, Vimanasthana 5 documents that the quality of Rasa Dhatu determines the quality of all subsequent Dhatu in the formation chain. When Rasa is impaired — either by Ama accumulation, inadequate nutrition, or Dosha aggravation — every downstream Dhatu will also be compromised. The classical understanding of Rasa maps closely to modern plasma: the carrier of nutrients, immune factors, and regulatory molecules to all tissues.

Elements
Prithvi + Jala
Primary seat
Heart
Primary karma
Ayu (longevity), Tarpana (nourishment)
Channel
Watery channels — Rasavaha Srotas
Upadhatu
Ojas
Mala
Kapha — the waste product of Rasa metabolism

Signs of imbalance

Vriddhi (excess): Excessive salivation, nausea, heaviness, cold sensation, pallor, anorexia, lethargy

Kshaya (deficiency): Dryness, thirst, palpitations, trembling, emaciation, fatigue, loss of lustre

Dhatvagni — the tissue fire
Rasa Dhatvagni — impaired by Ama accumulation, the most common Dhatu impairment. When Dhatvagni is impaired — by Ama, improper diet, or Dosha aggravation — the tissue cannot properly form the next Dhatu in the chain. This is why classical treatment of tissue deficiency begins not with tissue-building herbs but with Deepana (kindling the Dhatvagni) and Pachana (digesting the Ama that impairs it).
Rasayana for this Dhatu
Milk, ghee, Shatavari, Amalaki, Chyawanprash — sweet, liquid, nourishing preparations. The classical Rasayana approach to Rasa Dhatu: nourish the Dhatvagni first, then provide the specific Dhatu-building raw material through appropriate Rasayana preparations.
